Preserving a Vision: Reflections on the Eben Tourjée Documentary
We are proud to be a state with a rich musical and educational legacy, and this project reflects that pride within the Massachusetts Music Teachers Association (MMTA). As the project coordinator for this documentary, I feel deeply honored to have been entrusted with leading a project of such historical and personal significance for both MMTA and the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA). With the support of Valerie Stark, MMTA President, and Alison Barr, MTNA Eastern Division Director, the project officially began in April 2025, when early conversations gradually evolved into a clear vision: to document the legacy of Eben Tourjée and the origins of MTNA.
The documentary centers on Eben Tourjée, MTNA’s first president and a visionary educator whose ideas helped shape music education in America. It explores who Tourjée was, his founding of the New England Conservatory, and his belief in accessible and comprehensive music education—principles that continue to influence our profession today. Through archival materials and newly recorded interviews, the film bridges historical context with present-day leadership, offering reflection and inspiration for music teachers across generations.
Video Title: Eben Tourjée – How Can I Keep From Singing
In April 2025, we submitted a detailed proposal to the MTNA Foundation for this video documentary project and were grateful to receive an Affiliate Enrichment Grant, along with additional funding support from the MMTA Board. The months that followed were devoted to extensive research, archival coordination, interview scheduling, and shaping the narrative structure of the film. Filming took place in stages with generous participation from Brian Shepard, Chief Executive Officer of MTNA; Dr. Dr. Gary Ingle, former MTNA Chief Executive Officer; and Dr. Andrea Kalyn, President of the New England Conservatory, whose reflections brought both historical depth and contemporary perspective to the story.
We were especially fortunate to work with Rob Gati, a retired WBZ News producer, whose professionalism and storytelling expertise were instrumental in shaping a cohesive and compelling documentary. With the invaluable assistance of Maryalice Perrin-Mohr, Archivist at the New England Conservatory, we were also able to access numerous significant historical documents related to Tourjée during the summer of 2025, further enriching the film’s narrative.
The completed documentary premiered at the MTNA Annual Conference Gala in Chicago as part of MTNA’s 150th Anniversary Celebration. Seeing this Massachusetts’s project presented on the national stage was a profoundly moving moment. The film was warmly received by colleagues from across the country, and the positive response at the Gala affirmed the importance of preserving and sharing this remarkable story. It was especially meaningful to witness Eben Tourjée’s legacy honored in the presence of so many dedicated music educators.
Looking back, this project has been a powerful reminder of how collaborative and meaningful our work truly is. It has strengthened my appreciation for our shared history and reaffirmed how proud I am to be part of MMTA and MTNA alongside such dedicated and inspiring colleagues. We are now pleased to share the full documentary with our members, and I hope it serves not only as a tribute to our past, but also as a celebration of the vision, community, and purpose that continue to guide music educators today.
